Youth Outreach Program
The Ocala Symphony Orchestra Youth Outreach Program provides performances and master classes that are designed to be engaging, exciting, and fun, with great music that is chosen for its appeal to young listeners. The intent of this program is to support and to enhance Marion County school district’s existing arts and music curriculums. During the presentations students are introduced to live classical music through a string quartet, consisting of two violins, one viola and one cello or woodwind ensemble consisting of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn. The string quartet is led by the Ocala Symphony Orchestra’s Concertmaster, Dr. Oleg Proskurnya who serves as narrator and guide through the 30 – 45 minute program. Students learn first hand about the basic elements of music as each musician discusses their instrument. A short piece of music is then played to demonstrate each of the topics discussed and students are encouraged to ask questions during the Q&A session at the end of the program. The school visits will occur on the Friday prior to each of our concert weekends and are coordinated by Youth Outreach Committee Chair and OSO Board Member Naseem Shah and Public School Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne McGuire. Since the program’s inception the musicians have volunteered at Madison Street Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, Dr. N.H. Jones Elementary School, West Port High School, Sparr Elementary School and the Marion Juvenile Correctional Facility for Boys. Future visits include: Eighth Street Elementary, Reddick Collier Elementary and Hammet Bowen Elementary. The Board of Directors and staff of the Ocala Symphony sincerely thank the musicians for volunteering their time to prepare and present these wonderful performances and classes to our local school children and youth.
